The quick answer is nothing is new! In the States, people think that the President’s mattress sale , which used to happen every time there was a new President, but now seems to happen yearly. And then people think memory foam is new. Its not! in 1966, Charles Yost, an aeronautical engineer with Systems Dynamics Group at North American Aviation Inc. (through the Stencel Aero Engineering Corporation), along with Chiharu Kubokawa, a scientist from the Ames Research Center at NASA, created an open-cell material. It had unusually high energy absorption while still remaining soft and pliable. This open-cell, polymeric foam material with unusual viscoelastic properties is what we now know as memory foam. It’s thought the idea was taken and developed from the foam that was invented to pad out and protect British motorbikes and parts that were being shipped to the states to absorb the damage that could be caused by the ships rolling on the high seas. Both the trade name and the project name were called Temper hence the mattress brand called Tempur similar to the vacuum company Hoover!
